Very funny post (I don't know about NZ males vs. US males but you might be onto something. I really liked your improvement, I will have to do something similar to my own rig tonight. Thanks!

But every pixel grubbing equipment-o-phile knows that obsessing over 200% crops is the best way to spend a Saturday night. (or any other night for that matter :) )

Fair is fair: I just ragged Daniel on his blog about what I considered a too-pessimistic chart of pixel counts needed for various print sizes, so I guess I have to let him rag me back! Not that I'm out to get the guy -- I'm probably just jealous because he got to photograph the Creighton University Nutcracker and I didn't... or because his Mazda RX8 is cooler than my car. And he probably gets the hot chicks, too... -- Ranger 9

Does your Mac have an Intel processor? I think that that is one of the system requirements for Sofortbild. I am still using Tiger (10.4) so Sofortbild does not work at all. I was about to pop for Snow Leopard until I read this post.

-- UPDATED: The 10.6.2 update seems to have solved my previous problem using Sofortbild under Snow Leopard -- Ranger 9

THANK YOU for your tether software review, you spared me much exploration & experimentation.

i long refused to upgrade to CCP 2 for OSX 10.5, as Nikon should have provided it as a free update.

instead i downloaded Sofortbild, and it works better than Camera Control Pro 1 for 10.4.

most Nikon software sucks, and its support for Mac is abysmal ("if i could do it again," i would go Canon).

i love Sofortbild, and i thank you for informing me of it.

-- Glad you like it! <del datetime="2009-11-10T01:14:53+00:00">Just make sure you don't upgrade to MacOS X 10.6 ("Snow Leopard"), as it seems to break Sofortbild... at least that's been my experience so far.</del> UPDATED: If you upgrade to Snow Leopard, make sure you install the 10.6.2 update -- Ranger 9

Great job - useful information. Thanks.

Also check out DSLR Camera Report Server from onOneSoftware. It is a free Mac based controller for tethered shooting. But it has no controls at all! Instead, you download an iPhone app - try the $0.99 version to see if you like it and if it works with your camera. I did, then upgraded to the $19.99 version of the app.

You can fire the camera, set exposure compensation, change white balance, set an intervelometer, and use burst mode for 1-4 shots. WHen you fire the camera, the photo is captured to the computer AND it shows up on your iPhone for review about 1 second after firing the camera. Better, you can use LIVE MODE, and see the live capture on your iPhone - then fire when the subject is where you want it. All wirelessly using the wireless LAN in your home. I put the camera outside, computer with 20' USB cable inside, and I can walk around my house or go outside and see / fire whenever I want. Very cool.

Sounds interesting! Unfortunately, I don't have an iPhone, so I can't try it out. (Do you suppose it would work with an iPod Touch as well?) Also: How does it get along with MacOS X "Snow Leopard"? <del datetime="2009-11-10T01:15:37+00:00">Neither of the remote apps included in my review seem to work with Snow Leopard</del> [UPDATE: problems fixed by 10.6.2 update] -- Ranger 9

Great post- I've found those things to be true as well, and not just in photography!

Thanks for the post on the fast 50's, too. The new Nokton sure looks like a fine lens.

Take care, glad I followed your link from GetDPI.
